INQUEST is the only charity supporting families bereaved as a result of a state related death. Support, advice, and connections with other families are all key to navigating the complex and protracted inquest and investigation process, and to building resilience when faced with the grieving process.

Anyone can face a bereavement involving state violence or state neglect. Once that bereavement occurs what some families find particularly bewildering and traumatic is how isolating it becomes when no adequate service and very little funding for legal representation are available. Families tell us no one understands the specificity of such bereavement, when institutions default to defensiveness and shut down efforts of bereaved families to find out the truth and secure any accountability.

We want to maintain and develop family support and peer support structures, such as the existing online Connection and Consultation Cafes, online safe places where families can share and support each other, and our family forums and the family Facebook group. Families have told us these structures have been a lifeline, where they felt able to share about an experience that only families who have been through it understand, in a safe and non-judgmental way.
