BHMT’s Mental ‘Elf Derby is a Christmas football fundraiser for all the incredible mental health projects we support, which provide vital help to people suffering from mental health issues. We’re also using the match to raise awareness of suicide prevention through our partnership with Beder FC.

Despite huge increases in UK Government expenditure for Mental Health services, the British Medical Association suggests this is insufficient to support those with mental illness. The scale of unmet needs before COVID-19, and increased demands since has exacerbated this crisis and funding is unlikely to meet demands. Smaller independent charities have had funds withdrawn and fundraising has become more competitive, which is reflected in the high rise of applications for BHMT grants.

BHMT aims to support smaller independent, community-based charities, to benefit those experiencing mental health issues. The original aim of the Trust was an emphasis on those suffering from severe mental illness, following the death of Dr Dominic Beer in 2013, a psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of challenging behaviour. The Trust broadened its reach and communal aspect following the sudden death of Dominic's nephew, Joseph aged 21, with focus on the emerging adult (18–25-year-olds).
