Population matters! No single approach to creating sustainable population will fit all nations so local support is vital. In Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, we're supporting local partners to reduce population growth. Help our work continue country by country, making a difference globally.

Situation
Our growing numbers are ignored as a contributor to our environmental crises. Those most affected, who understand local factors, must lead on delivering the solutions. Nigeria will be the world’s third most populous country by 2051. This is having major effects - two thirds of the population already lives below the poverty line. Population growth drives huge demand for energy, straining the planned transition to renewables. Nigeria also has the highest rate of deforestation in the world.
Solution
In February 2024, support from our amazing Big Give Christmas Challenge donors facilitated a Population Conversation, among 90 local stakeholders, in Nigeria. Our approach is always to consult and support locally, recognising the knowledge and experience that already exists. The Population Conversation was informed by a unique, in-depth survey of citizens' views across Nigeria. Better access to family planning and girls' education were supported as key solutions, and we will now build on this.
