Situation
6.5 million people fled Ukraine when the war began in 2022; many thousands have settled in neighbouring Romania. Families arrived in distressed conditions, having lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and country. Countless children arriving have witnessed terror; they exhibit PTSD, are insecure, unable to go to the toilet on their own, are constantly hungry, struggle to sleep and are frequently unable to speak. This poses difficulty for parents who are seeking employment in a foreign country.
Solution
International Needs UK in partnership with International Needs Romania began an ecosystem in 2023 to support the rehabilitation of Ukrainian refugee families by helping them to settle in their host communities and begin supporting themselves. A key part of this ecosystem has been the Kindergarten (for children aged 0-5 years) and Temporary School (for 6 to 11 year old). Both have been running successfully with trained teachers and a qualified psychologist who provides trauma care.
