People living in the Kamala River Basin have been displaced by climate change-related floods. We will offer support and hope for the future by ensuring that their children access education and that they themselves can better withstand future floods so that no further lives and livelihoods are lost.

    Situation

Climate change related floods have claimed lives, homes and livelihoods in the Kamala River basin. Impoverished low-caste families have been displaced into communities where they are unwelcome. If their sons go to school they do so irregularly since the schools are low standard and they don't understand the lessons. Their sisters stay at home to help with housework as education is seen as time wasted. These people are without hope or prospects and the cruel floods could strike again at any time.

    Solution

We will boost school attendance for boys AND girls by improving the fabric of three local schools and by building two Community Learning Centres (CLC’s) where children can receive help with studies. Tutors will be students from the same low-caste groups, paid allowances from a new bursary fund that cover their college fees. We will build cohesion in the community by ensuring CLC management committees include displaced people. We will plant four rapid-growth forests as natural flood barriers.
