Situation
The North East is facing a severe food insecurity crisis, with food poverty rates over 10% higher than the national average. Alarmingly, one in three households in the region struggles to access nutritious food, underscoring the urgent need for support. Yet, at the same time, 4.6 million tonnes of edible food is wasted across the UK each year - enough to feed everyone in the country three meals a day for nearly two months. In a country where so much food is wasted, this reality is unacceptable.
Solution
FareShare North East is committed to driving change by rescuing nutritious food that is too good to waste, delivering it to over 230 community groups and charities, ensuring it reaches those who need it most. Our vans travel as far as Berwick all the way to Redcar. We collaborate with those that provide essential care services such as debt relief and housing support, to ensure that the 25,000 individuals we serve not only receive nourishing food but that we are creating routes out of hunger.
