Global Justice Now is campaigning for a globally just transition away from fossil fuels. We want an international Fossil Fuel Treaty to plan and manage a fair global phase-out of fossil fuels, and new trade rules which allow global south countries to build and protect their own green industries.

To tackle climate change, we must phase out the oil, coal and gas industries that are at the heart of the problem. But there is a risk that this shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy turns into a new resource grab by the rich world, exacerbating global inequality and failing to win support among the most affected communities. We need global rules to prevent the new green economy being based on poor working conditions, dispossession and exploitation in the global south.

We need to ensure the shift to a green economy is based on justice. We need an international Fossil Fuel Treaty: a global exit plan to phase out all fossil fuels quickly and fairly. And as part of this, we need to ensure that trade policies do not allow big business and rich countries to monopolise the natural resources needed for the green transition, causing further environmental damage and harming people in the global south.
