Situation
In Garissa County, Kenya, maternal and neonatal mortality is unacceptably high. Here, less than a third of women attend 4 of the 8 WHO-recommended antenatal care appointments - the lowest in all of Kenya. Insecurity, pastoral and patriarchal culture and low literacy combine to hinder women’s agency and ability to access the life-saving healthcare they are entitled to, while the region’s climate change-related extreme heat poses further risks for maternal and neonatal health.
Solution
Child.org has pioneered Team Mum Pregnant Women's Groups to make pregnancies and births safer in two counties in Kenya already. Our participatory community groups bring together pregnant women to improve their health knowledge and agency, encourage antenatal care attendance and improve women’s experience of care. Team Mum in Garissa will adapt our tried-and-tested model to support 2,000 pregnant women to keep themselves alive, safe and healthy during pregnancy and beyond.
