Situation
CFT piloted a programme with selected Year 5 pupils from across Chichester to provide weekly learning provision at the Theatre for disengaged pupils and those facing challenging home and school lives. This was identified as a unique programme amongst theatres across England, and was devised in response to consultations with teaching staff at local schools. Following positive feedback and evaluation, we now plan to deliver a new programme of activities for a new cohort of pupils.
Solution
The programme supports literacy and social development, develops self-esteem and confidence through a range of creative activities. We include performance and ideas-sharing opportunities, ensuring participants’ voices are heard within sessions, influencing collective ideas and decision-making within workshops. Pupils develop a positive relationship with peers, working collaboratively as a member of the team, instilling respect, and supporting in-school learning.
