Situation
4.3 million children – 3 in 10 – are growing up in poverty in the UK today. Families are struggling with the costs of everyday items, and increasingly need support from the social security system to cope. People struggling financially may turn to advisers such as Citizens Advice, or other frontline workers such as health or foodbank workers for help. But the social security system can be difficult to navigate, and families and children can be left without the support they need.
Solution
Our nationwide free advice helpline is available to any frontline worker or volunteer supporting families on a low income, so they can get the financial help they need. Last year, our advice service responded to 7,513 cases, helping an estimated 30,052 people on a low income secure enough money to cover household essentials. CPAG receives no government funding to run our expert advice service in England and Wales. We rely on donations to keep the service running free of charge, five days a week.
