We will work with women and girls to build skills in transforming their harvests into saleable and storable products, providing equipment, training and business plan development. This will allow very poor women and girls who are often forced to migrate to generate sustainable incomes

Situation
Yorosso is one of the poorest districts of Mali and Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world on the UN Human Development Index. Many girls are forced to migrate to look for work to help their families to survive. They work in illegal gold mines in dangerous conditions or as servants in cities. They earn as little as £5-8 a month in cities. In the mines the women and girls work 13 hours a day and 80% of them earn nothing. They are extremely vulnerable to rape and abuse.
Solution
We will provide training to 500 women and girls to transform their harvests into saleable produce – things like soya milk, miso, cheese, dried fruit and soap. Processing greatly increases the value of harvests and income at village level and also means that produce can be stored and sold throughout the year rather than being sold at a low price after the harvest. This will allow women and girls to earn an income in their villages.
