Situation
Cyprus is home to the highest number of people seeking asylum in Europe, per capita. The island has seen a 500% increase in arrivals since 2016, with more & more people fleeing violence and war. After a traumatic journey, people seeking asylum are left with no support, while facing daily challenges, destitution and racist attacks. The authorities are overwhelmed. People seeking asylum must wait months for basic essentials like food and hygiene items, with no access to bureaucratic support.
Solution
We offer people seeking asylum a sense of normality, agency and hope. At our pioneering Dignity Centre, people can choose food and hygiene items just like a normal shopping experience. They can also receive support registering for basic benefits and the labour market, assistance writing CVs, a weekly barber service, and signposting to help people navigate the system. These offerings, in a welcoming space, support people as they reclaim agency over their lives and take the next step.
