Basis support women who sex work and who are sexually exploited. They suffer acute as well as chronic health needs due to many years of substance use, homelessness and frequent experiences of violence. Our outreach service helps victims link with vital health services to get the help they need.

Most streetbased women we support (sex work or sexual exploitation) have significant health needs, including liver disease (linked to substance use), acute mental health crises (sometimes leading to suicide) and wounds due to violence or substance use (and high risk of sepsis). Cancer is often found too late due to lack of access to health screening linked to stigma, homelessness or lack of a phone or transport. Many die prematurely (average of those who died in the past 5 yrs is 41 yrs old).

Our low barrier outreach and drop in service is critical: we host a drop in 3 times/week with our own staff and volunteers alongside sexual and general practice nurses, mental health practitioners and harm reduction specialists open to any woman who is sex working or sexually exploited to attend. We also go on evening outreach 3 times/week, with weekly support from health professionals, offering food, condoms, testing, health care, harm reduction, access to emergency accommodation and more.
