Childhood poverty in Tanzania is severe and with that comes lack of access to quality education. 41% of secondary age children were out of school in Tanzania in 2018. For young girls especially, access to secondary school is difficult. They cannot afford the travel, the uniforms or supplies, and without food, their ability to study is hindered. Girls are also hampered by forced domestic care duties at home, abuse, early marriage and pregnancy causing non-attendance or early drop outs.
Our school in Kisarawe provides free, quality education and care to girls from the most impoverished communities and families. They live at the school, with all their food, shelter and education needs provided - for free. This removes the barriers to their education, including violence and abuse, domestic responsibility, child labour, early and forced marriage and early childbearing. By providing all their education needs, including exam fees, girls can graduate ready for fairly paid employment..
