Women are experiencing the worst conditions we’ve seen in prisons for decades. Self-harm is at its highest recorded rate; 8 times that seen in men’s prisons. Making up just 4% of the prison population, the needs of women swept into the criminal justice system, including with mental health, domestic abuse and poverty, are overlooked. WIP’s vision is of a society that no longer accepts the structural inequalities that lead women and girls into contact with the criminal justice system.
We work collaboratively in the community, custody and in prisons with women and girls facing structural inequalities through programmes & campaigns that challenge & change oppressive systems. Our programmes provide holistic support for women swept into the justice system, so they can thrive. Our campaigns tackle the root causes of women’s alleged offending, advocating for changes to policy and legislation, and investment in preventative, community-based support, not imprisonment.
