Situation
Westminster Cathedral’s parquet flooring is beginning to deteriorate and as it is now cannot be easily resealed and polished as it was in earlier years. At the moment the flooring can be sanded and professionally resealed. Following initial professional treatment it can subsequently be resealed periodically by the cleaning team. If the flooring is left it will deteriorate further and eventually need replacing which would be very expensive.
Solution
We have found a contractor who can sand, treat and reseal the floor. An initial area has been treated in the Lady Chapel and in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The treatment has proved both effective and attractive. The same method can be applied across the whole of the Cathedral Floor. This will need to be carried out in small sections over the rest of 2024 as the areas being treated need to be closed and only small parts of the Cathedral can be treated at one time.
