The northern area of Gorka where Manbu is located, in the shadows of Manaslu and Himalchuli mountains, is sparsely populated, so many villages are miles from the nearest health centre. Food poverty is still a problem, with an average of 23-40% of people living in food poverty.

Situation
Delivering healthcare in remote villages in Nepal is very challenging. Typhoid, leprosy, burns and toothache are just some problems affecting communities. Families walk for several days to access care. Due to a lack of essential medicines and health awareness, children die from diarrhoea and other treatable illnesses. Malnutrition rates are alarmingly high, as is maternal & child mortality - childbirth is rarely assisted by a skilled health worker.
Solution
PHASE places 2 Nepali Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) to support the work at the health post, as well as run an outreach programme, where they carry out door-to-door visits of families in Manbu to provide healthcare check-ups, advice and run health education events in the community. They improve healthcare access by offering a reliable basic health service, as well as integrating into the heart of the communities they work in.
