Situation
Today in Manchester, nearly 7,500 people are experiencing homelessness. Poor mental health is both a cause and a consequence of homelessness, with 45% of those experiencing homelessness diagnosed with a mental health issue, and many more going undiagnosed. People come to us not only for support getting or keeping accomodation, but because the stress and challenges they face exacerbates or causes mental health problems, resulting in further trauma and keeping them in the cycle of homelessness.
Solution
It is well established that creativity and activity improve mental health. Within our safe and social space, we offer our Wellbeing Activities Programme which is designed and delivered with those who use our services. People join in arts and drama, sewing, philosophy, reiki, gardening, woodworking, yoga, as well as Walking Group and Women-only sessions. These projects often result in public performances or exhibitions, improving confidence and allowing people to focus on something positive.
