This project addresses isolation and loneliness by working with individuals to find them a suitable match with a friendly volunteer who will call them on a regular basis or by providing in-person interactions or community activities to provide companionship and emotional support.

Situation
According to Community Life Survey 2021/22, around 3 million people in the UK feel lonely. Feelings of chronic loneliness and social isolation can have serious implications on mental and physical health, potentially leading to depression, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular issues. Society often overlooks these issues, leaving many older people feeling forgotten or ignored. This can lead to a lack of engagement and connection with society - worsened by factors like retirement or bereavement.
Solution
We will offer telephone and in-person befriending to create a supportive, inclusive community. We will partner with an extensive network of referral organisations including housing associations, GPs, and the Fire & Rescue Service plus offer the option for self-referral. We will develop our networks further in order to reach more people who would benefit from this support. By connecting people with friendly volunteers we will foster enduring relationships to combat loneliness and isolation.
