The Connection aims to improve access to mental health support for people sleeping rough in London. Despite evidencing higher levels of mental health needs (80% have mental health issues / 85% have experienced abuse or trauma), individuals sleeping rough are left unsupported and vulnerable.

    Situation

Managing mental health is key in recovery from rough sleeping with 80% of people rough sleeping evidencing mental health issues, 85% having experienced abuse or trauma. Almost 30% cite poor mental health as the reason they are homeless. For others mental health issues worsen with the trauma of life on the street. Yet, for people rough sleeping, access to mainstream mental health support is almost impossible with exclusions due to no fixed abode, complex needs, substance misuse and anxiety.

    Solution

In addition to offering mental health support, The Connection will place mental health needs at the centre of all service through a psychologically and trauma informed approach and environment. Support will include; 1) Building trusting and healing relationships and bridging gaps to other services. 2) Psychological triage (crisis intervention, assessments, safeguarding) 3) 1-2-1 Therapy 4) Group work led by psychologists 5) Therapeutic Activities
