Situation
It is estimated that 25% of the population of North East Scotland will experience a mental health problem each year. People living in Aberdeen's most deprived communities (SIMD) are nearly twice as likely to experience a mental health problem. This demographic formed around half of our client base last year and this proportion will likely increase further. Last year alone we received 844 requests for support and currently have a 20-week wait time for an initial appointment with a counsellor.
Solution
Our trained counsellors provide a confidential place where they offer respect and understanding and will not make judgements. It is hoped that our clients will feel able to be open and discuss what has brought them to counselling, such as grief, relationships, work-related stress, bullying, redundancy, childhood issues, health issues, and so on. By providing professional counselling by voluntary donation we remove affordability as a barrier to accessing vital mental health support.
