£40k could help get 40 children back to school to maximise their education and life chances. For 40 years School-Home Support has been showing up for children and their families, looking beyond the classroom to tackle the underlying causes of absence, but the need has never been greater.

The most recent government data shows 1 in 5 children in London were persistently absent from school in the full year 2021-22. Disturbingly, this rate has doubled since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many children who are persistently absent face significant challenges such as poverty or inadequate housing, which have been exacerbated by the cost of living crisis. Poor attendance is linked with poor performance at GCSEs, reducing the life chances of the most deprived children in London.

For 40 years School-Home Support has provided whole-family support by placing practitioners in schools that have high rates of persistent absence and in some of the most disadvantaged areas of London. Practitioners use bespoke strategies for families, providing one-to-one support, early intervention and agency referrals. It costs on average £1,000 to support 1 child and their family intensively. £40,000 could help us show up for 40 children and help them back into school.
