We believe in the transformative power of music to change lives. But music education is fast becoming a privilege, not a right. We work to improve equitable access to music education and quality and inclusivity in music teaching, to ensure every child has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Studies show clear links between music-making and children’s wellbeing, confidence and wider social and academic outcomes. Yet a 2023 Ofsted report states there remains a divide between the opportunities for children whose families can afford music tuition and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The cost-of-living crisis has exacerbated the problem: a 2022 ISM report found that the average yearly budget for music in state schools was less than a fifth of those in independent schools.

Our Flagship Schools programme provides an immersive music education for over 1,000 children every year in under-served London communities, enabling us to highlight what is possible for all children in state primary education. From age 4, children embark on a programme of musicianship and instrumental learning delivered by skilled teachers who lead group and one-to-one lessons, alongside exciting performance opportunities and creative workshops.
