MAH provides weekly therapeutic singing sessions for mothers (and their babies) with acute mental health conditions and postnatal depression referred by St Mary’s Hospital. Our sessions foster a nurturing environment in which mothers connect, support each other and form healing communities.

Motherhood is a time of, often overlooked, isolation and mental ill-health: more than 1 in 10 mothers develop a mental health condition during pregnancy or the first year after birth, and 20% of our local residents have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression. MAH particularly supports mothers with acute mental health conditions which impact them and therefore their babies too. This can weaken mother-baby bonding and cause deep rooted and long-term emotional damage to the developing child.
MAH is rooted in research, with every aspect of our musical sessions being carefully planned to create a warm, nurturing, supportive and healing space in which mothers can bond with their babies and with others in the same situation. Through the common language of music and by singing together and sharing songs, the mothers in our groups form bonds and quickly enable each other’s confidence to grow, and the babies interact with their mothers and each other thus building emotional strength.
