The impact of meningitis on people’s mental health is huge. Recovering from meningitis and dealing with its impact contributes to a range of common mental health problems including anxiety and sleep issues. Therefore, we want to expand our programme of mental health courses to address this need.

Every year around 8,000 people in the UK contract bacterial or viral meningitis. Many can be left with lifelong and debilitating physical after-effects, as well as experiencing a range of mental health problems and emotional difficulties. Common mental health problems such as anxiety, low mood and associated issues with sleep are evident for many of the people we support, including those that have lost a loved one. Dealing with these problems can have a profound effect on people’s lives.

We successfully delivered two bespoke anxiety management courses in 2023 as part of a pilot to increase support for common mental health problems. The success of these, and the report that followed, gave us the evidence we needed to continue this vital work. Recommendations from the report included a need to focus on sleep; therefore, we are looking to work alongside a registered psychologist to introduce a bespoke sleep management intervention and deliver a further anxiety management course.
