The Blue Meadows programme from the Ocean Conservation Trust is a holistic approach to delivering critical work to halt the decline of seagrass around the UK, by protecting what we have and by creating a blueprint for restoring this critical habitat at scale.

Seagrass is critical element of the marine environment around the UK. It is a photosynthetic super plant, supporting carbon sequestration, oxygen generation, rich biodiversity, fishery nurseries and supports coastal management. And yet due to physical disturbance, pollution, invasive species and disease we have lost up to a staggering 90% of the once abundant seagrass around the UK’s coastlines and is one of the most endangered habitats on the planet.

Over the next 5 years, we are aiming to protect 10% of all UK seagrass meadows and restore areas at scale. We will do this by identifying existing meadows, using marker buoys and alternative moorings to prevent further damage, and by engaging with local communities and stakeholders. Our restoration work relies on seed harvest and growth in our labs, monitoring with our dive team and remote technologies, and driving innovative research into new methods of delivering at scale.
