Music is so beneficial to our mental wellbeing, yet those who work in music seem to struggle more than most with their mental health. This is why Help Musicians’ sister charity Music Minds Matter exists. We understand that working in the music industry can bring with it unique pressures, and when things feel tough, it helps to talk. Our support line can connect anyone working in music to a counsellor who will listen to what’s on their mind; and our website offers resources, videos and peer support to those struggling.

Situation
Of the nearly 6,000 musicians who completed the Musicians’ Census, almost a third (30%) of all musicians reported experiencing negative mental wellbeing. The vast majority of musicians (73%) work as freelancers which means that if they experience a mental health crisis, they are isolated from support structures that would help to manage their health. For a freelance musician, there is no HR department or paid sick leave to fall back on — they are truly on their own.
Solution
Prevention is at the core of Music Minds Matters’ approach. It provides support to promote positive mental health among the UK’s musical community. Our ambition is to reach and support more people across the whole music industry who need our support we provide in 2024. We know that the current level of support we are providing is only just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the level of need. The services available through Music Minds Matter are open to anyone working in the music industry and include: a free, confidential helpline, peer-led video resources and online events aimed at promoting self care. Money raised through the Big Give’s Kind2Mind will go toward providing this essential support.
