By a path alongside the River Frome in central Stroud, you can spot dippers, grey wagtails, kingfishers and otters. But it’s dark and slippery and the river is affected by debris. This project will enhance the area for wildlife and create a place where locals and visitors can spend time in nature.

Situation
The problem is that there is a beautiful, tranquil haven for nature right in the centre of Stroud. However, it has been affected by flooding and erosion; the river contains debris, which affects its flow; the footpath is very dangerous and slippery; signage is poor; the area is unsafe and is not optimised for biodiversity or for people. The path could be a very useful, safe, traffic-free alternative to the towpath, but it is virtually impassable, and only fit for people who are fit and able.
Solution
SVP will solve the problem by coppicing the hazel and willow that we planted last year and using wood from the site for habitat restoration and maintenance, including building deflectors in the river to create areas of slower flowing water; we will strengthen the pathway and put in sturdy boardwalk so it is accessible to more people; and we will maintain the plants and trees in a sympathetic way so that wildlife thrives. We will create a tranquil place for people and for nature.
