    Situation

In addition to the climate and nature twin emergency, bats are misunderstood and ongoing and escalating human-bat conflict results in bat persecution - putting people and bats at risk. Southern Africa has 130+ bat species, covering a diverse range of habitats but limited bat conservation capacity and only two existing bat groups covering the subcontinent; opportunities to change perceptions and create support for bat conservation are challenging.

    Solution

We will work with key stakeholders across southern Africa to develop a multi-species action plan to inform conservation priorities. Through training and supporting newly established bat groups, we can increase in-country capacity, support bat conservation on the ground and highlight human-bat conflict hotspots to direct engagement activities and community support. For example, delivering our Classrooms without Walls school programme, promoting community champions and community scientists.
