Creating woodland landscapes where threatened wildlife can thrive in the face of increasing challenges from changing weather and floods. Together, we can improve the habitat to help rare species whose numbers are declining rapidly, including iconic UK hibernators: dormice, bats and hedgehogs.

    Situation

1 in 6 UK species are at risk of extinction. Climate change and habitat loss have left hibernating dormice, bats, and hedgehogs among our most vulnerable species. Their traditional woodland and hedgerows are fragmented. Our warmer, wetter winters cause them to delay hibernation, wake up too frequently or emerge too early. When this happens the insects, flowers and fruit so crucial for their survival can be harder to find. We must take action to support these rare creatures adapt to survive.

    Solution

Avon’s woodlands can offer habitats for dormice, hedgehog and bat populations to recover. Plantation-style trees can be transformed into woodlands designed to be more resilient to ‘the new normal’ weather patterns by reducing flooding to support a healthy eco-system. We can enhance the woodland by planting a broad range of native plants which offer improved foraging and nesting opportunities. We can bring more sunshine through the canopy to nurture a natural larder for hibernators to wake up
