Help AFRIL’s Healthy Start project support child nutrition and exercise. Our foodbank and allotment support healthy eating for refugee families living in poverty with food vouchers, vegetables and fruit. Children enjoy sports, outdoor activities and healthy snacks at our Rainbow Club and allotment.

The children AFRIL supports are disproportionately affected by poverty and the cost-of-living crisis which negatively impacts their health. Surviving on low incomes, often with no recourse to public funds and in cramped housing conditions. Parents cannot afford healthy culturally appropriate food and skipping meals impacts physical health, mental health and educational attainment. Children rarely have access to safe green space at home and are unable to access sports clubs due to cost.

This is an investment in children’s bodies and minds. Our foodbank will provide food vouchers so families can budget better to access food of their choice. We will add fresh fruit, vegetables, and salad, some grown on our allotment. Families at the allotment will cook together and share learning to grow healthy food, and children will exercise and learn in this outdoor green classroom. Children at our Saturday school will take part in sports activities to improve their mental and physical health
