Every single day, Samaritans volunteers provide emotional support to 10,000 people. 1 in 5 calls are from people expressing suicidal thoughts. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we are raising awareness of the stigma around suicide and vital funds to invest in the biggest transformation to our helpline service since Samaritans was first founded.

By the end of this year, all Samaritans branches will move away from the UK’s traditional analogue phone system onto a new internet-based platform. This digital transformation project is complex but essential in helping us future-proof our service, so we can continue to be there – without interruption – for anyone who is struggling to cope.

Samaritans have so far successfully piloted new internet-based phone calls at several of our branches and we are in the process of a phased roll-out to our entire branch network. This is a huge innovation that will not only improve the quality of our helpline service, but also help expand our online chat service and the range of volunteering opportunities that are available. “Thank you for saving my life. I contacted you early in the morning, I don't remember much but being in so much pain. I couldn't even begin to tell you my pain. You could hear it though and just gave me time. You didn't patronise me or rush me, you stayed with me, I got to the hospital in time, just.” - Samaritans caller
