There are over 1,400 species of bats in the world, making up 1/5 of all mammal species. Despite this, there are still significant knowledge gaps. We want to support the next generation of scientists conducting vital research that supports bat conservation in the UK and further afield.

Bats are a vital part of our natural heritage and play an important role in many habitats around the world. The more we understand and learn about bats the better we can protect them. Unfortunately, they are still widely misunderstood and undervalued so there is a significant lack of funding opportunities for further research. We want to help a new generation of scientists to carry out vital research and become bat conservation ambassadors in the UK and abroad.

We know the difference that science-based conservation can make. We want to be able to continue supporting early career scientists carrying out vital research. One way we do this is through the Kate Barlow Award, which was created in memory of the late Dr Kate Barlow, and aims to encourage postgraduate students to conduct a substantive bat research project. Since its creation in 2017 the award has supported seven inspirational individuals conducting research all over the world.
