    Situation

The island of Madagascar is one of the most vulnerable countries to Climate Change and frequently hit by cyclones. It is one of the poorest countries in the World with a high reliance on farming. In rural communities 90% of people do not have access to electricity. With no alternative families have to chop and burn wood, use kerosene lamps, paraffin candles, or live in the dark. Without electricity schools struggle to give children the education they need. Activities after dark are impossible.

    Solution

By harnessing solar power we can provide access to clean renewable energy for the community. Using schools as the focus point we will install a solar system in each school. This will provide renewable energy to power devices for the school and charge a community power bank. The power bank charges ‘solar sticks’ which families rent on a daily basis. This is cheaper and better quality than buying kerosene or candles, providing safe, clean light, and can charge electronic devices in their home.
