Situation
Environmental defenders and Indigenous communities are catalysts for meaningful action on climate change. They educate communities, document abuses, campaign internationally, and keep critical commitments on track. As unscrupulous businesses carry out destructive activities in new territories, those least responsible for carbon emissions must fight even harder against climate change and rights abuses. This is dangerous work: at least 177 land and environmental defenders were killed in 2022.
Solution
PBI helps thousands of people to safely defend their rights daily. We stand alongside activists, with our volunteers providing ‘protective accompaniment’ to keep them alive. We work with activists to identify the tools and networks that they need to ensure their work thrives. We will connect environmental defenders across the world, working together to build their capacity and advocating alongside them to ensure they are heard by decision-makers.
