    Situation

Peru holds the second-largest expanse of Amazon rainforest in the world, yet deforestation rates have skyrocketed. Indigenous Peoples, such as the Wampís Nation, are the best guardians of our precious forests. The Wampís’ territory spans over 1.3 million hectares and is a hotspot for biodiversity. Their forests make a significant contribution to climate mitigation, storing 145 million tonnes of CO2, yet they face severe threats from illegal loggers, gold miners and other megaprojects.

    Solution

Forests managed by Indigenous People statistically see lower rates of deforestation. Therefore, empowering communities like the Wampís is vital in preserving biodiversity and global climate protection. This project aims to provide urgent support to the Wampis Nation to protect their territory and forest from threats and promote community-led livelihoods initiatives that lead to more equitable and resilient communities.
