Low literacy has lifelong consequences. For many children and young people, accessing books outside the classroom is a significant challenge. One in five children in the UK doesn't own a single book and nearly 25% of 11-year-olds from the poorest families have fewer than 10 books at home. This lack of access to books creates a self-perpetuating cycle. Without exposure to diverse experiences and rich language, children from disadvantaged backgrounds fall behind.

Our method is simple, focused, and successful: volunteers bring books to homes or connect online, sharing the joy of reading with children and their families living in under-resourced areas. We visit families weekly building a foundation for enthusiastic reading from early childhood. Unlocking a love of reading is proven to increase a child's ability to read, proving that every story shared changes lives. This targeted early support gives children who need it the most a critical hand-up.
