Situation
It is a sad reality that 1 in 5 of us will feel suicidal in our lifetimes. 1 in 15 of us will go so far as to attempt suicide. Indeed, if you know someone who dies under the age of 35, the most likely reason is that they have taken their own life. NHS mental health waiting lists are getting longer and services tend to focus on very high-risk individuals with complex conditions or those struggling with anxiety or depression. Those feeling suicidal often fall between these two categories.
Solution
Our charity will offer free, face-to-face, support for people struggling with suicidal feelings. This support will focus on three key characteristics: 1) Time. We will not use a waiting list. All referrals will be offered an appointment within 1 week of referral. 2) Space. We will offer a completely confidential, non-clinical space for people to meet face-to-face with a volunteer. 3) Compassion. Support will focus on non-judgemental, active listening rather than advising or diagnosing.
