Over hundreds of years, humans caused harm to the environment of South Georgia, first by hunting seals and then by commercially hunting whales very nearly to extinction. In so doing they also accidentally introduced invasive species and left behind remnants of industrial pollution. Following our decade-long project to eradicate introduced rats from South Georgia, birdlife on the island is now recovering. Yet there is still more to be done to safeguard this special place for future generations.

With your help, we will carry out and support research and conservation projects to protect species ranging from albatross to whales. We will work with the South Georgia Government to ensure their vital biosecurity dog team can keep the island rodent-free. Importantly, we will also tell the story of the island’s remarkable conservation successes to inspire others, so that South Georgia can become an exemplar for managing other remote places and beacon of hope for conservation worldwide.
