Poaching of rhino across South Africa remains high and is a threat to their future on our planet. New technology will be a key tool to protect the rhino; and LORA tracking devices enable anti-poaching teams to stay one step ahead of the poachers and help prevent further rhino deaths due to poaching.

    Situation

After a significant lull in rhino poaching during COVID restrictions, South Africa is once again experiencing huge levels of poaching. Criminal gangs are using improved technology to carry out their horrific crimes and conservationists need to match them. Unless trained anti-poaching units are given the use of new technology, more rhinos will be slaughtered on the plains of Africa and this iconic species will continue to face the most uncertain of futures.

    Solution

In the Eastern Cape of South Africa it is a race against time to fit as many LORA rhino tracking devices as is possible. Through the collation of information to a centralised database LORA tracking devices enable anti-poaching Rangers to both track their rhinos live, and create better strategies through access to historical data, improving efficacy of patrols. Each procedure to fit a tracking device requires a helicopter and pilot, a vet and a support team. The procedure per rhino costs £975.
