Each year the number of baby hedgehogs requiring admission to Prickles and Paws increases. The species is now classified as vulnerable to extinction in the UK; it is vital that we give every hoglet the best chance or returning to the wild, this takes specialist food, equipment and time.

Human activity and disturbance cause many hoglets to be orphaned each year. We have rescued and hand raised 1,869 hoglets since 2014, with highest admissions in one season being 346. The rescue needs to increase its capacity to accommodate the growing number of hoglets admissions. The more that can be saved and released back into the wild is a positive contribution towards conserving this iconic species.

We hand raise orphaned or abandoned hoglets from across the Southwest from as young as a day or two old through to weaning and release back into the wild. We provide constant warmth via incubators, regular feeding and toileting; all of this takes a great deal of money and time. The increase in energy prices within the last 24 months has put a massive strain on the charity. Our dedicated team of experienced carers give the hoglets the best chance of survival.
