The Cornish coast is of vital importance for Moss carder bees. This rare bumblebee is in decline across the UK and there is much to learn from them in Cornwall. We will use surveys to better understand their distribution and the habitat they prefer, which will help us to protect their future.

    Situation

Moss carder bees urgently need our help. Once widespread across the UK, this species is now in decline and restricted to certain coastal areas. Sadly, we have a limited understanding of the habitat and conservation needs of this rare bumblebee. However, we do know that Cornwall's coastline is of special importance, with significant historical records and recent sightings. We need to study Moss carder bees in this area, to better understand how to conserve and protect them in the future.

    Solution

Our Project Officer will survey key sites along the North Coast and the Lizard. They will also recruit and train volunteers to carry out regular ongoing monitoring in the area through our BeeWalk national citizen-science scheme. In areas where there has been a cluster of recent Moss carder bee records, we will survey and study the landscape to gather information on their preferred habitat and the plants they are using for food. We will also engage with landowners to offer training and advice.
