Northern Ireland is home to a wealth of butterflies and moths, including threatened species such as Marsh Fritillary, Cryptic Wood White, Irish Plume and Scarce Crimson & Gold. Butterfly Conservation has ambitious plans to increase our action in NI for species, landscapes and people.

    Situation

Northern Ireland holds significant populations of species that are declining across the UK, with many internationally important habitats and landscapes. 12% of Northern Ireland’s land is peatland, a crucial carbon store and haven for wildlife, but only 15% of this is in good condition. Conservation is not currently at the scale needed to protect the species and environment in Northern Ireland; we must rapidly increase capacity and expand our efforts to make a difference before it’s too late.

    Solution

We will use data to target action and rebuild populations of declining species, demonstrating nature recovery at scale. We will work with partners in the sector, land managers, statutory agencies and community groups to provide advice, directly restore habitats and build skills. We are developing major projects to support landscape restoration of peatland and grassland, as well as targeted conservation action for threatened species, supporting farmers and land managers to help nature thrive.
