African forests are rich in biodiversity and support the livelihoods of over a billion people. They also lock up carbon, helping to combat climate change. A Rocha is protecting 260,000 hectares of threatened forests across five African countries through our locally led conservation initiatives.

African forests are under pressure from numerous threats. For example, Atewa Forest – home to more than 100 threatened species – faces risk of bauxite mining from the Ghanaian Government. Dakatcha Woodland in Kenya – located in one of the world’s most threatened forest hotspots – is being cleared for charcoal and agriculture without consideration for what is being lost. Unsustainable and unmanaged human activities also threaten West Bugwe, one of three natural forests remaining in Eastern Uganda.

Through our African Forest Programme, we work with community members to support local livelihoods, protect and restore habitats, monitor biodiversity and campaign to protect threatened forests. We are committed for the long-term to people and places. Together we help protect 260,000 ha of forest across Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. This means 5,000 community members are supported through sustainable livelihoods, and over 150 threatened species and their habitats are protected.
