This project will support one community to construct a sand dam, implement sustainable agriculture, and practice environmental protection techniques. This will help to enhance food and water security, safeguard the environment, and strengthen smallholder farmers' resilience to climate change.

    Situation

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranked 185 on the UN Human Development Index. The country is vulnerable to extreme climatic conditions, such as droughts, cyclones and floods, contributing to widespread food and water shortages, as well as chronic soil erosion. Over 70% of poor households rely on rainfed agriculture as their main source of food and income, meaning that water scarcity and unreliable weather patterns pose a significant threat to their livelihoods.

    Solution

We will support the construction of one sand dam for a community in Manica Province, providing year-round access to clean water (a sand dam can store up to 40 million litres of water which meets WHO drinking standards). Communities will be supported to implement environmental protection techniques, helping to reduce soil erosion and preserve the local environment. A tree nursery and agroforestry plot will be established, helping farmers to improve soil fertility and food security.
