Tree Aid works with communities in the drylands of Africa, to tackle poverty and the effects of the climate crisis by growing trees, improving incomes, and restoring and protecting land. Every tree we grow is providing food and incomes today and protecting the environment for tomorrow.

Situation
The effects of the climate crisis are being felt across the globe but nowhere is harder hit than the Sahel region of Africa. Temperatures are increasing and fertile land is disappearing, the drylands of Africa is facing a triple emergency of poverty, environmental degradation and climate change. Gender inequality is also embodied in laws and traditions across the region that prevent women’s access to land. This barrier has a huge impact on their ability to grow or sell enough food to survive.
Solution
Trees grow when other crops fail, enrich the soil and provide communities with a source of food and income. We support communities and women to make and sell tree products, like shea butter and soap. 60% of the people we worked with last year were women. The income they make from their businesses pays for essential healthcare and education for their families.
