Journey into the depths of a rainforest. The air hangs heavy; sunlight plays on the greens of myriad plants and trees. But this isn’t a tropical paradise. It’s one of the last temperate rainforests that once covered vast areas of the British Isles. Together we can restore these mythical forests.

Native to the British Isles, temperate rainforest is rarer even than its tropical counterpart. Once covering a fifth of the UK, all that remains now are scattered fragments totalling approximately 1%. Rainforests were destroyed over thousands of years due to the need for timber, clearing for farmland or urban development. Pests, disease and invasive species, pesticides and pollution, over-grazing and the impacts of climate change all threaten the precious fragments that remain.

The Wildlife Trusts' ambitious plan will create new rainforests on sites with the conditions needed for them to thrive, and protect those that remain. We'll acquire land, plant trees and reconnect existing fragments. Communities will be at the heart of restoring rainforests in the UK. The places we create together will become havens for wildlife and local people.
