Climate change, especially in the form of prolonged droughts, is impacting traditional pastoralist ways of life all over East Africa. APT and our Kenyan partners SITE will support indigenous camel-herding communities in northeastern Kenya with better access to water, and will support women in those communities with skills and access to finance to catalyse their camel milk businesses.

In Kenya, over 9 million people rely on pastoralism for their livelihood. They come from communities living in arid and semi-arid areas, practicing traditional pastoralist livelihoods which are ecologically sustainable and climate-smart, especially compared to modern industrial livestock farming. The climate crisis is causing increased droughts, unpredictable weather, and reduced water availability, threatening these communities with food insecurity and an existential risk to their way of life.

APT, with our Kenyan partner SITE, will strengthen water access, incomes, food security, and climate resilience for camel-herding pastoralist communities in northeastern Kenya, through supporting the effectiveness of traditional camel husbandry. This will be achieved through improving water access for communities and camel herds – especially via the renovation of water reservoirs – and through catalysing the businesses of women selling camel milk. This builds on work of our previous projects.
