Situation
Not enough school children in Croydon have access to music education. This is particularly true for secondary schools. 50% of children at independent schools receive sustained music tuition, the figure for state schools is a mere 15%. In Croydon hundreds of schools have collectively lost £800,000 in government funding designated specifically for poorer pupils since 2021. Global majority artists and artists from disadvantaged backgrounds are under-represented in the classical music industry.
Solution
We will do the following: Increase our education work in both primary and secondary schools. Introduce a new Inspire programme for Primary schools. Introduce a new set works programme for secondary schools aligning our education work with the national curriculum and side-by-side performance opportunities for more gifted pupils. Selection process for schools to include criteria on Pupil Premium to ensure we target the most disadvantaged.
