FareShare's innovative FLEX Project, works to extend the life of surplus, good to eat food that would otherwise not be suitable for redistribution, e.g., due to a short shelf-life. The FLEX project allows us to make food last longer through freezing, canning, preserving and juicing.

Foodwaste in the UK More than 3 million tonnes of food grown in the UK each year, goes to waste. This good to eat food is enough for an estimated 7 billion meals. Some of the reasons why food goes to waste is because of seasonal over production or short shelf-life. Tackling this problem would not only provide much needed food for the 13 million people in food insecurity, but each tonne of food redistributed would prevent the loss of 2 tonnes of CO2e and 2.66 million litres of embedded water.
FareShare Food Shelf-life Extension (FLEX) Project The FLEX project is an innovative solution to food waste, where FareShare takes surplus, good to eat food that has a short shelf-life, and processes it through freezing, canning, preserving or juicing to extend its shelf-life, e.g., a glut of tomatoes becomes canned soup. So that at a later date this can be distributed through our network to over 8,500 frontline charities and community groups, where it can be used by families in need of support.
